Our Sod Installation process begins with a consultation and a conversation, then a plan is formed and agreed upon.
The next step is to properly grade the area that will become lawn, ensuring positive drainage. Drainage catch basins, if necessary, are installed as well at this stage.
Next We prepare the subsoil by loosening it to a minimum depth of 6"-8", now we can amend the soil with lime, compost, topsoil, and fertilizer.
This gets tilled together and fine graded. Laying the actual sod comes next. After the sod has been laid, it needs to be trimmed to the desired shape, watered to a depth of 3", and rolled to ensure contact between roots and soil.

Fescue
Fescue Sod Installation Pricing for the Chapel Hill area
Fescue Sod Installation Pricing:
Pricing varies depending on site conditions, grading required, machine access, soil amendments, and distance from delivery zone. If there is no major site work required, you can expect to spend between $2.15-$3.75 a square foot to install fescue sod in the chapel hill area.
Installing Fescue Sod in Chapel Hill requires proper subsoil preparation so that roots can grow deep fast, making the turf more resilient to stress.
Amending native soil gives fescue sod the conditions it needs to thrive. Amendments add nutrients and organic matter to the soil, improve moisture retention and drainage properties, adjust ph (typically necessary in the chapel hill area), and increase air spaces required for gas exchange so that fescue sod roots can thrive.
Spring and fall are the ideal times to install fescue sod in our area, fescue sod can be installed in winter as long as temperatures are not frigid; summer installation not recommended.
Installing Fescue sod during these times requires less worry, and less water. Fescue is most active when daytime temperatures are 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Fescue is the grass that stays green all year if it isn't experiencing drought stress.
Zoysia
Zoysia Sod Installation Pricing For the Chapel Hill Area:
Grading, amendments, and drainage requirements will affect overall price. If the site is ready for sod you can expect to pay between $2.75 and $4.25 per square ft.
Bermuda Sod Installation Pricing:
If the lawn area needs no further improvements you can expect to pay between $1.75-$3.75 per square foot.
Installing Zoysia Sod in Chapel Hill, NC and the surrounding areas is slightly less intensive than installing fescue sod.
Zoysia is a tough, drought resistant, creeping turf grass that is my top pick for our area.
Zoysia will perform best in full sun and will typically require less fertilizer than Fescue.
Zeon zoysia can handle some shade (3-4 hours of direct light) but truly wants at least 6-8 hours of direct light each day.
In addition to these other benefits, zoysia requires less water than fescue.
Once established Zoysia can withstand the rigors of a Piedmont summer without irrigation by going dormant during times of stress.
When dormant, zoysia leaf blades will dry up and turn straw yellow.
A return to green will occur shortly after rain or an irrigation event.
Because Zoysia can spread from Stolons (above ground "runners") that send up new tillers (genetic replica of mother plant) and
Rhizomes (underground stem like structure that produces new roots and shoots) a border is recommended to prevent the turf from invading planting beds and undesired areas.
Zoysia is most active when daytime temperatures reach 80-95 degrees fahrenheit, and soil temperatures are around 65 degrees.
It is best to have the Zoysia sod rooted by the time it is most actively growing.
March-May is the preferred spring window for Zoysia sod Installation in the Chapel Hill area. Zoysia can sucessfully be installed through the summer with proper irrigation.
