Lawns from Seed

There is not always money in the budget for installing a sod lawn during a landscape renovation project, or a new landcape installation project. That is why we offer Lawns from seed. The first step in creating a lawn from seed is to mechanically remove existing vegetation, sometimes herbicide is required as well depending on existing plant species. After existing vegetation has been removed, rough grading, drainage, and hardscapes are constructed. After this phase large plant material, topsoil, shrubs, and irrigation can be put in place. Now it is time to fine grade the lawn space with topsoil.

At Celestial Landscaping our philosphy is to avoid using chemical fertilizers if at all possible, amending the soil with compost, sand, pine fines, and other organic matter create a long lasting healthy lawn without the need for harsh chemicals. After the soil has been amended and fine graded we can apply the desired seed species. Seed is spread at the reccomended rate (species dependant), wheat straw is applied to prevent evaporation and to protect newly germinated seed from too much sun. Hilly terrain requires the use of erosion control matting or coco coir blankets to prevent erosion and keep seed in place until germination.

Temporary sprinkler systems that work on battery powered timers are available to help the grass become established without wasted time outside holding the hose or moving sprinklers around the yard. Here are some photos of projects that called for a seeded lawn instead of sod.
